Kansas City investigates the dumping of dead pit bulls in the Northland

The animal control and codes enforcement departments are investigating the possible case of animal cruelty and illegal dumping.

The dogs were found Tuesday stuffed into four garbage bags in the 5800 block of Oak Ridge Drive, a dead end street north of Stroud Oak Ridge Manor restaurant. The dogs may have been dumped several days ago.

City spokesman Chris Hernandez said that because the area is a known spot for illegal dumping, camouflaged cameras were in place and may have caught the dumpers on film.

Hernandez said city residents may take ill or unwanted pets to the animal shelter at 4400 Raytown Road, where the euthanasia fee is $25.

The city announced this week that starting April 1 the shelter will require people relinquishing pets to first make appointments.

The Public Works Department will pick up dead animals left in bags at the curb within 24 hours. Residents should call 311 to arrange that service.
